About This Game Colonize Mars and discover her secrets, with minimal casualties. Welcome Home! The time has come to stake your claim on the Red Planet and build the first functioning human colonies on Mars! All you need are supplies, oxygen, decades of training, experience with sandstorms, and a can-do attitude to discover the purpose of those weird black cubes that appeared out of nowhere. With a bit of sprucing up, this place is going to be awesome! Surviving Mars is a sci-fi city builder all about colonizing Mars and surviving the process. Choose a space agency for resources and financial support before determining a location for your colony. Build domes and infrastructure, research new possibilities and utilize drones to unlock more elaborate ways to shape and expand your settlement. Cultivate your own food, mine minerals or just relax by the bar after a hard day’s work. Most important of all, though, is keeping your colonists alive. Not an easy task on a strange new planet. There will be challenges to overcome. Execute your strategy and improve your colony’s chances of survival while unlocking the mysteries of this alien world. Are you ready? Mars is waiting for you. Main Features:Building on a planet not fit for human life challenges you to build a smart, functional colony. Bad planning isn’t about traffic jams, it’s about survival of your colonists. You really don’t want rolling blackouts in a city constructed in a place without oxygen. Each colonist is a unique individual with problems and strengths that influence the needs and behavior of the other colonists. Things can get really interesting if your chief scientists develops alcoholism after one too many long nights in the lab. Retro-futuristic super structures housing colonists, factories and commercial buildings with their own “neighborhood personality.” Create colonies that value science over everything else, while tired workers drink their pay away at a local bar, or attempt a utopia among the stars. Inspired by the classic sci-fi of Asimov and Clarke, Surviving Mars holds many secrets. During each playthrough players may encounter one of Mars’ individually crafted mysteries. Uncovering these secrets might bring your colony great fortune, or terrible ruin. What is that sphere that manifested itself outside colony HUB B, and is it friendly? Combine static and random research through experimentation, which allows for a different experience for each journey through the game. Attain new scientific breakthroughs by exploring the uncharted terrain of Mars's surface.A sleek, modern take on the bright futurism of the 1960s. A time of exploration and adventure.Craft your own fantastic buildings, parks or even a mystery to share through Surviving Mars’s extensive and convenient modding tools. The Drones Need You!The Devs message to fans.... Message Received, my reply is at the end of this review. Surviving Mars is a niche Market game aimed at Space lovers, City building folk and Resource Management fans. The usual bad manage leads to dead people applies, guess thats the survival part of the name. That and the storms, quakes, meteors but lets not make this complicated at this stage :)Having played a considerable number of games in this niche, id say this ranks as one of the harder but most fun ones. In fact I can say with a great deal of confidence this is the BEST Mars game ive played and I already consider this game a classic. If you dont like that kind niche of gameplay, you probably will not like this game. You will just end up wasting \u00a330 and leave a bad review and feel let down. Niche games by their every nature appeal to a smaller customer base that main stream games. If you are a city, space, resource management type of guy, understand this is one of the harder games in this niche, it is also slow paced but also one of the most fun and in my opinion, one of the best games in this niche. This is a up until 3am game if you like this sort of thing....Its a storm off to complain game, if you dont! Youve been warned. Hot TIP for your first game: Whilst looking at the planet view to chose your landing spot, understand you will not survive in all areas you may chose to land. A combination of random elements + mysteries can bring a slow death to even a successful settlement if you chose badly. So dont be fooled by better temperatures and lots of resources, those storm rating will kill you dead if you let greed cloud your judgement when choosing a landing spot. Seriously, these devs where just showing off when they made this game..... This sort of little detail is everywhere in the game. Game follows the establishment of the first Martian colony, and tries to ask what would happen next. You struggle at first, choosing how to spend the vast budget given to you and wonder why is there an economy at all when your rolling in money right from the start.... Well its a LONG game and those billions dont last long when everything you need has to come from Earth. This is not a fix for a bad design, its a design element and fits with the game play arc nicely. When people arrive to occupy the robot built base you made first built, the resources start to become stretched thin and people start to die if you get it wrong. Until now its a fairly easy game, after this point it starts getting harder. Resources start to mean life or death. Soon your chasing resources, but the more you build, the more resources you need. It appears you are doomed to fail from the start... But no... the devs really where showing off when they made this game, all part of the game play arc and the mars experience. Research lowers the cost of things, eventually giving you access to things that never run out of resources, you just have to survive long enough to research them. Over a period of hundreds of years your base is going to change a lot, many of your original domes may become redundant, people will move out of them to go and live in better domes. You will wonder why they are empty, failing to understand the level of comfort in a dome is a major factor in settling Mars successfully. So those original domes may well end up being knocked down, and over many years your settlement may change completely many times. More research, better equipment, larger domes, more people, self sustaining populations... that is the arc of this game.I couldnt help by feel this game included a Socialism vs Capitalism set or choices where one side would care and throw money at a problem and get a socialist reward for doing so, the other side would want to be greedy and would simply save them selves the expense of wasting that money. I think such choices where an interesting part of this game. Then the Devs went and released the Green DLC and lets not forget the mysteries that throw a curve ball at your settlement. These DLCs are so worth it.... dont head to mars without them... Trust me... get them too, especially the Green DLC. In the end you have a sprawling settlement, large domes connected by passage ways and the design of your settlement isnt anything like what it was originally. Most of the problems that you struggled with have been dealt with and you have trees growing all over Mars, even the Planet View seems to have changed with entire areas now covered in water (Green DLC). So just like a real city, your settlement has changed with you. Many games of this kind never change, Tropico for example pretty much stays the same with just newer buildings popping up. You will still recognise your early town in your late game city. Not here on mars though, survival forces you to change things and adapt. To optimise your settlement, to remove older things that eat up too many researches. But dont go thinking everything you research will be good, there are some terrible ideas in there that need far too many people and resources that make things worse. Why should even tech you research actually be better anyway..... Who said every new idea would be a good idea ?In fact who said the good ideas are always the ones we adopt, real life does not work that way and neither does this game. It provides you choices.... you choose which tech you wan to use, good or bad, you get to chose either, and it may make or break you in the end. I am not sure if youve ever been so good at something that you felt you could just sit back and mess with the rules that govern the universe and play around with them as if they where mere toys. Doing 3 impossible things before breakfast simply because you can.....If you have ever felt that way, you will recognise it again here in this game. The devs really are showing off in Surviving Mars. I recommend taking a package deal, the Game + DLCs, not just the game because the game benefits greatly from the DLCs. Message to devs "You are the children of a dead planet, earthdeirdre" :)Strongly Recommend!. Better than tropico, feels awesome.. This game could have been so much better, and it has alot, but it's missing alot too.The concept of the game is great, collecting resources to survive and managing the colonists. And yet, the game fails to do this in a way where it doesn't drive you insane. It's almost a vicious cycle:You introduce colonists in your specialized domes, and yet even if you put in all the effort in specializing them, new colonists arrive and mess everything up, the buildings that give boots to colonists with specializations are pointless as the corresponding colonists don't work there, most of the time, and if you filter it to only specialzation only 1 or 2 work there even if there are plenty of colonists with the specialization nearby. Then the resources don't get produced enough because of this, so everything that requires maintenance (practically everything) breaks down, and then you melt whilst thinking why didn't those damn enginners just work in those factories already! Instead you find them in the spacebar, even though there are other non-specialized colonists nearby. These bugs (and a few more that further dampen the experience, such as the grids not working properly (or showing in the first place)) ruin the game for me, even though i so desperately want to play it.I hope these types of bugs gets resolved, and perhaps a clearer way on how to fix the issues with the game :\/. I've tried to play this a few times now, but kinda find it a bit dull and directionless. I'm sure there's a good game in there somewhere, just needs some TLC with some form of tutorial \/ campaign that doesn't bore you to tears before finding the fun.Anyway this is not a full review yet, more about first impressions. Hopefully with the Green Mars expansion out soon I'll give it another go to see if it warrants keeping installed.. Great micromanagement game with survival elements. It reminded me of the old "SimCity 2000" days. I like it.. I am very much enjoying this. Was not too sure what I was getting into when buying it, perhaps a sort of Simcity or Tropico on mars, no, what I got was a lot more and am very happy.. Great micromanagement game with survival elements. It reminded me of the old "SimCity 2000" days. I like it.. Better than tropico, feels awesome.. Spent 75mins after buying in tutorials..was hooked pretty amazing and optimised.. Lets see how much i like actual gameReview will be updated after i get to 10-12hrs
